The National Highways has launched a two-day drive to remove encroachments from Sankaranpalayam to Kannamangalam junction along NH-234 Mangalore to Villupuram Road.
Parts of this stretch will be widened soon, while officials will also take up works to construct storm water drain in the urban segments.
There are several permanent encroachments on this stretch, and also temporary ones such as shutter sheets. This includes commercial establishments, residential buildings and temples that have encroached parts of the road.
The encroachments were being removed for nearly 3 km starting from Sankaranpalayam to Kannamangalam junction along the stretch. The works that began on Tuesday will go on for two days. Close to 30 workers are involved in the works to remove encroachments, while two earthmovers and two tipper lorries have been engaged.
The road is being widened from 7 metres to 10 metres.
The government has allocated Rs. 1050 lakh for the works.
