As the noon-meal employees tried ti siege the Vellore Collector’s office, there was a scuffle between the police and the employees. Several people got injured. Police arrested 834 noon-meal employees who indulged in strike.
With demands such as work hours-based wages, clearly defined pension scheme, etc, noon-meal employees have been protesting since the last few years. Now, they are on ancontinuous indefinite strike demanding immediate action.
As a part of their protest, they went on a fasting stirk day-before-yesterday (Thursday, 16th April. The noon-meal employees have announced that they would be on a ‘jail-filling’ protest.
Over 500 noon-meal employees, led by the senior officials of their association, collected at the office of Vellore Collector yesterday, Friday, 17th April.
The striking crowd shouted slogans pressing their demands like full-time employment and a monthly pension of Rs. 3500/-, etc.
Then, they tried to take siege of the collector’s office. As they tried to enter the barricaded area towards the office complex, the security police on duty blocked them.
There was a scuffle between the noon-meal employees & police. The district secretary of the association, Ms. Andal, fainted. The police sent her for treatment in an ambulance.
Another person, Ms. Vijayakumari (age 59) of Pudhupadi village (Arcot) got cut in the hands and was bleeding.
The employees now started protest by blocking the roads. The police team, led by Deputy Superintendant Panneerselvam, arrested 834 persons including 695 women.
This created some excitement in the area.
