Vellore district Forest Officer Mr. Selvaraj informed that 90 moderndrinking water storage devices will be located at different places in the forest to take care of the drinking water requirement of the wild animals in the forest areas and in order that they do not leave the forest in search for drinking water.
There has been an increasing trend of forest animals like deer, boars, elephants, and bisons straying from the forest and entering village areas in search of food and water during the scorching summer in Vellore.
Last year, more than 10 deer lost their lives getting caught by the dogs or involved in accidents. Elephants entered the mountain-base villages and terrified the residents.
Intensity of summer has already increased this summer. In these circumstances, when discussing the measures to tbe taken in order to prevent the wild animals straying from forest areas, Mr. Selvaraj informed that there are froest areas in Vellore & Thirupathur. Vellore forest area covers 1.272 Lakh hectares. Bisons, deer, sambal deer, spotted deer, bears, peacocks, and pythons live here.
The ponds in the forest areas dry quickly during summer. Hence, the wild animal tend to stray to nearby villages in search of water. Measures have been taken to prevent this.
50 earthen-lamp shaped storage tanks of 6000 litres capacity at a cost of Rs. 18000/- have been set up at 50 places in the 6 forest areas located in Vellore, Arcot, Amirthi, Odukkathur, Gudiyatham, and Peranampattu.
The storage devise is designed so that wild animals can drink water easily.
Ambur Forest Officer Mr. R Rajkumar informed that 40 storage tanks have been set up in Thirupathur forest areas to prevent wild animals straying into residential areas.
