A team of 50 persons belonging to Marxist Communist Party has taken up the task of pressing the demand to protect the River Palaru from Kalathur till Thottalam in Vellore District.
The team, led by Mr. N. Kasinathaan, has undertaken a 800 km promotional trip.
Mr. N. Kasinathan stressed the demand for the central and state governments to take up the project of constructing a 100 km canal to divert the River Nethravathi to the River Palaru.
As a part of the promotion campaign for this cause, the team distributed leaflets on the demand to Ranippettai BHEL employees on Wednesday, 12th August.
All the team’s designated officials participated with enthusiasm.
Team leader Mr. N. Kasinathan addressed the gathering on Wednesday:
River Palaru is the main source of drinking water for the people of Vellore District. However, the river is being polluted by the effluents from industries and illegal sand quarrying.
This has raised doubts and questions in the minds Vellore District citizens. At this juncture, the central government has announced the project to link the 2 major rivers in the country, Ganga & Kaveri.
On similar lines, a project must be undertaken to protect the river Palaru and the people who depend on it as the main drinking water source by building a 100 km canal to divert the river Nethravathy flowing West from the state of Andhra and reaching the sea which is a real waste of usable water.
