107th Anniversary of Nilgiri Express train was celebrated at Ooty (Udhagamandalam) Railway Station yesterday, Thursday, 15th October.
A unique feature of the Nilgiri express track is the it is the only railway track in the country with rack & pinion arrangement.
The track was initially constructed between Mettupalayam and Coonoor and later extended up to OOty in 1908.
When the track completed 100 years in the year 2005, UNESCO awarded the ‘World Traditional Heritage Site’ to Niligiri Express train system.
Tourists who visit Nilgiri district make it a point to enjoy the joy-ride in the steam engine driven train between Mettuppalayam and Coonoor.
Yesterday (Thuirsday, 15th October), when the train arrived at Ooty railway Station in the evening, the tourists were given flower bouquets and sweets.
107th anniversary was celebrated sponsored by Traditional Mountain Rail Endowment. District Collector Mr. P. Sanakar and Former Head of Indian Atomic Corporation Mr. Srinivasan participated and cut the cake.
Traditional Mountain Rail Organisation’s administrator Mr. Nataraj and members of several other institutions, ancient tribes and a lot of public participated on the occasion.
