Steep fall in Coconut Prices due to Excess Harvest

semi-husk-coconut-768258There has been a surplus harvest of coconut in areas like Sengottai and its surrounding areas.

With the steep fall in coconut prices, the farmers became quite depressed and they have started demolishing the coconut farms and selling them as house plots.

The region Sengottai & surroundings alone have around 2 Lakh coconut trees.

Coconouts are plucked from the trees once in every 45 days. The yield is 50 lakh coconuts. They are sorted quality-wise and sent to the markets in Thirunelveli & Palayampatti. The copras are sent to Kangeyam, Vellakkoil, etc.

As the North-east Monsoon was good this year, there has been surplus harvest of coconuts.
