People who do not want or are unable to stand in queues may be able to makeenrolments for Aadhaar by sitting at their homes. The census department plans to set up camps in localities based on requests from residents associations. Census department officials collect demographic details and biometric parameters – fingerprints and iris images – under the NPR scheme and the Unique Identification Authority of India issues Aadhaar numbers that are to be linked to bank accounts to help residents get benefits under various centralschemes. In Chennai, just 35% of the residents have enrolled under the NPR.
Joint director of census operations M R V Krishna Rao said that many residents in the city are unaware about these camps and also added that the aim was to achieve at least 70% enrolment in Chennai by October.
