Idea Cellular Acquires 81 Lakh Customers Via Mobile Number Portability

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is the feature launched in January 2011, which allows the users to swap operators devoid of having to change their numbers within their service area.

On the net basis till 31 December, Idea Cellular has become the prime gainer of 80.88 lakh customers through mobile number portability (MNP). At the same time the Reliance Communications (Rcom) lost 60.13 lakh subscribers.

In the list of Top three telcos till 31st December, released by the Ministry of State for Communications, Idea tops the list with 1.88 Crores customers, Vodafone ranks second with 67.19 lakh users and Bharti Airtel placed third with 40.16 lakh subscribers.

Even though Vodafone leads with the highest number of port-ins with 2.41 Crores customers and has 1.74 Crores of Port-outs, because of MNP. Airtel has 2.21 Crores of port-ins and 1.81 Crores of port-outs. Splendidly, Idea leads 2.11 Crores of port-ins and only 1.30 Crores of port-outs. Reliance Telecom, which offers GSM-only services, has add-on 6,166 users.

According to the survey reports, the Tata Teleservices, state-owned BSNL and MTNL goes down by 37.97 lakh, 13.19 lakh and 1.87 lakh customers respectively in total based on the MNP.
