At the Amma canteens across the city, chapattis and dal were served from yesterday evening.
The food was over within one and half hours. Every canteen was told to make 1,000 chapatis and about two lakh chapattis were sold across the city.
Roundabout queues stretched outside most canteens from 5.30pm. People seemed eager to have two chapattis for 6. A few canteens that traditionally see the most business, like the one in Santhome, shut their token counters at 6.20pm. In many canteens, cooks had to make chapattis manually as they did not have machines.
