Processions of flower-bedecked palanquins carrying the deity of Amman from different parts of Vellore converged at the New Palar Bridge as part of Mayana Kollai festival on Friday, the day following Mahasivaratri.
A large number of people from Vellore and surrounding villages made a beeline to the Palar River and performed rituals invoking the blessings of their forefathers at the burial ground. They offered worship to the Amman deities before performing the rituals.
The occasion was also marked by a lot fanfare with youths dressed in fancy attire dancing to the tunes of songs glorifying the goddess.
Police had made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order. Katpadi Road was blocked for traffic in the afternoon to facilitate the passage of huge palanquins.
Traffic towards Katpadi and Vellore from Katpadi side was allowed on the Polur Subramaniam Bridge (Old Palar Bridge).
