Commercial buildings to incorporate new energy conservation techniques

A stakeholders meeting was conducted in which Chennai Corporation officials and those from municipalities took part. Discussions were made on shaping up Energy Conservation Building Code in the upcoming commercial buildings and complexes across the state.

According to this, all newly constructed commercial buildings ought to adopt designs that help in energy conservation. Officials said this code will cover around six thousand such structures in the state.

The code is getting drafted under Energy Conservation Act, 2003. It is believed that the new method will help in reducing 40 per cent of energy consumption in such large areas. The city will have more than 2500 commercial buildings coming under this code. On account of this, factors like envelop of building, heating system, lighting system, air-conditioning system, water supply, etc will have to be changed. As Chennai has more numbers of such buildings, it is expected to be of great help for conserving energy.
