Errors in exam results of Thiruvalluvar University

Numerous errors in the results of undergraduate and postgraduate examinations (semester/non-semester/Choice-Based Credit System old and new) of the Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, held in November/December 2013, which were published on the university website on Monday have shocked students, colleges and the Association of University Teachers (AUT).

C. Rajesh, I year B.Com. student of Voorhees College, Vellore, said that though he attended the internal examinations for all subjects in the first semester, he has been marked absent in internal marks column of the mark sheet published on the university website.

M. Manigandan, P. Aravindkumar, C. Arunkumar and D. Madhan Kumar, I year B.Com. students of the same college, said that though they wrote UCM12 (code for the business administration paper) external examination, they have been marked absent in the external marks column for the subject in the mark sheet. They said that they have represented to their college principal to get the errors rectified in the mark sheets.

S. Kumar, Tamil Nadu State Joint Secretary of AUT, said that the mark sheets of V. Gayathri and M. Deepathilagai, II Year M.A. history students of C. Kandaswami Naidu College for Women, Cuddalore, contained external examination marks for PCM13 (global marketing), a paper which is not in the syllabus for M.A. history, in addition to the marks for the papers which she had written.

Similarly, R. Meena, B.Sc. maths student of the same college, has been given marks for SSMB (microbiology), a paper which is not in the syllabus for the course. M.Sc. maths students with register numbers 20001 to 20015 in the college have been marked absent in PMA14 (1st semester, 4th paper) external exam though they have appeared for the exam. Many first semester M.Sc. maths students of Voorhees College have either been given zero marks or marked absent in the PMA11 paper external exam despite attending the exam and doing well in it, he said.

Vigneswaran, assistant professor of zoology, Government Thirumagal Mills College, Gudiyatham, said that D. Vijay, B.Sc. chemistry student of the college, has been marked absent for the external exams and given eight marks for internal examination in UA2015 (allied zoology) though the student had not taken zoology as an allied subject.

When his attention was drawn by this correspondent to the errors, P. Asokan, Controller of Examinations, Thiruvalluvar University, admitted to the errors, but said that despite the utmost care taken by the authorities in publishing the results, the errors have crept in not only due to lapses on the part of the university but also lapses on the part of the respective colleges and students.

As for students being wrongly marked absent, he said that this was due to the failure on part of the colleges in furnishing attendance certificates to the university in time. Errors have also occurred due to wrong entries made by students in application forms for various examinations, he said.

A. Arulappan, Principal of Voorhees College, told The Hindu that as far his college is concerned, the hard and soft copies of the internal marks of students were sent to the Thiruvalluvar University office on January 6. Attendance particulars of the candidates were collected and taken by the university personnel with them along with answer sheets immediately after the examinations were over, and therefore, there were no lapses on their part, he said.

Mr. Asokan said that out of eight lakh students from colleges in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Villupuram districts who wrote the university exams in November/December last year, errors have occurred in the mark sheets of only 2,489 students. When data entry was done manually, a few errors were unavoidable. “We have rectified the errors wherever they were brought to our notice. We will continue to rectify the errors in the mark sheets whenever they were brought to our notice in future,” he said.
