IPL 2014 tournament to be held in UAE, Bangladesh and India

Ending the speculation over India Premium League (IPL) 2014, a release of BCCI on 12 March 2014 said that the tournament will be held in United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bangladesh and India from 16 April to 1 June 2014. The tournament will be played in three different phases and the first phase at least 16 matches will be played in United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 16 April to 30 April 2014.


The second phase of the tournament from 1 May to 12 May 2014 will be held in Bangladesh only if Union Home Ministry doesn’t permits to hold the event in India. The BCCI at present is seeking permission to play IPL matches in Indian cities, where the polling will be concluded in respective states till then.
The third and the last phase of the tournament will be played in India once the polling will conclude in all states of the country. As per the decision, the board of BCCI has decided to conduct the remaining league matches plus the playoffs in India from 13 May 2014 1 June 2014. It has also decided that no matches will be conducted on the day of counting of the polls on 16 May 2014.

Background
Following the decision of the Election Commission to conduct polls in the country from 7 April to 12 May 2014 and the counting will take place on 16 May 2014, the dates of the tournament coincided with the election dates. This coincide dates brought with itself security and related issues as the Union Home Ministry made it clear to the board that possibly it will not be able to provide the required security for the tournament during the election period.
