Gunasekharan, Vice-Chancellor of the Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore.Speaking at National Voters’ Day celebrations here on Friday, he said the role of youth in achieving a better polling percentage in elections was witnessed in the Assembly elections held in Gujarat last year where the percentage of youth among voters had increased from 25 (in the previous election) to 90 in Ahmedabad alone.

The National Voters’ Day was being celebrated to remind the people of the need to protect democracy by voting in the elections, he said.

P. Sankar, Collector of Vellore, who presided, urged all those who completed 18 years of age to vote in elections.

The total votes polled in the last Assembly elections reflected an increase by 60 to 70 %. The percentage of increase should go up to 90. The number of voters in Vellore district which was 26,66,900 (13,38,226 women, 13,28,650 men and 24 others) in 2012 had gone up to 27,29,737 (13,73,273 women, 13,56,431 men and 33 others) after the 2013 summary revision.
