Keeping in line with World Diabetes Day 2014, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of Christian Medical College (CMC) is conducting an exhibition on November 13.
The exhibition and a poster competition titled “Diabetes can break your heart” will be held on the CMC hospital campus between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Stalls – The departments of Cardiology, Physiotherapy, Dietary, Ophthalmology, Vascular Surgery, Prosthetic and Orthotic Services, along with the Department of Endocrinology, will put up stalls highlighting need for adequate knowledge of diabetes, its complications and prevention, says a press release.
Diet –
- Doctors said it was important to improve awareness among not only patients but also among families and friends. Irrespective of age, everyone could benefit from a healthy diet and adequate physical activity.
- The food you eat could decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke, and hence it was important to choose foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, added sugars and sweeteners.
- Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, fibre-rich whole grains, fish (preferably oily fish at least twice a week), nuts, legumes and seeds was vital, the release noted.
Physical activity –
- The doctors reiterated need for regular physical activity as it would help prevent diabetes and reduce risk of heart problems and stroke.
- One could slowly work up to at least 2.5 hours of physical activity such as brisk walking, jogging or running.
