Auto drivers belonging to the Vellore District AITUC Auto Workers’ Association have urged the district administration to grant permission to those possessing light motor vehicle (LMV) licences to operate public service autos.
The auto drivers submitted petitions to the district administration. Tere are several persons, who earlier worked in agriculture, mills, shops and other jobs, and then turned to driving autos owing to economic hardships.
Many of these drivers possess LMV licenses. They should apply for badges that permit them to drive autos for public.
But the Central government had issued orders saying that only those who had studied up to class VIII will get badges. Without the badge, they have been frequently fined.
Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had assured to take measures to issue badges for LMV license holders during her election campaign in 2011.
As is is a question of livelihood for many auto drivers, steps should be taken to issue badges or at least grant special permission to operate public service autos.
