Families of newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Government Vellore Medical College
Hospital (GVMCH) will now on be able to see visuals of the babies outside the facility.
In this system, the visuals are captured through a mobile video and audio camera and shown on a 50-inch television screen outside the NICU.
The unit at the Tirupattur Government Hospital too has installed a similar facility.
The Health Minister has instructed that all NICUs should have this facility so that parents and relatives can see the babies and check its status with the doctors.
However, the parents of newborns, who have been admitted to level-3 of the NICU in critical condition, cannot see the babies.
The hospital’s NICU already has Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.
The live visuals of the babies will be shown to the families, who are waiting outside, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
Thus, the parents will be able to understand the condition of their babies, especially those in critical condition. The names of the babies will be announced and then shown to parents and relatives.
Presently, there are a total of 39 babies in the NICU.
