Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme on a standstill in Vellore

The Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme has come to a standstill in Vellore Corporation for the last two to three
months as veterinary doctors have been demanding increase in the fee for performing the surgeries.

As a result, complaints of stray dog menace have been pouring from residents.

The Government of India had fixed the cost of performing the birth control procedure and immunising stray dogs at Rs. 440 per dog.

Of this, Rs. 60 is paid as fee for the veterinary doctors performing the sterilisation surgery.

Until three months ago, the Vellore Corporation had sterilised 44 dogs but the programme was stopped after the doctors started to demand that the government increases their fee.

Though the doctors have not specified any amount in writing, officials said they were expecting at least Rs. 100 for male dogs and Rs. 200 to Rs. 250 for female dogs.

However, complaints of stray dog menace have been pouring in from residents of various areas. No action could be taken though the Corporation has adequate staff, kits and infrastructure.

Stray cattle have become another problem.
