Two months have passed by since the revised minimum fare of Rs. 25 for auto rickshaws came into force in Vellore district. However, auto drivers are yet to comply with the revised fares!
They refuse to accept the minimum fare of Rs. 25 for 1.8 km and continue to charge commuters in excess.
Many drivers say that Vellore does not have centres where auto metres can be recalibrated as per the revised fare structure. Also, collector’s approval is required to authorise agencies for recalibration of auto meters.
In October, the Collector had issued an instruction that the revised rates will be applicable from October 16 and autos plying with electronic meters were told to recalibrate within 45 days of the date of order.
The revised fare should also be written or printed on the vehicles but this too is far from being followed.
Officials said the deadline had expired and they were making arrangements for meter recalibration centres.
Auto drivers’ unions continue to argue that Rs. 25 as minimum fare is not suitable for a place like Vellore. They also feel that share autos also eating into their space.
