The police had to resort to lathi-charge the crowd which had gathered to organise ‘Jallikkattu’ event in spite of the ban.This led to some commotion in the area.
It has been a tradition in several villages in Vellore district to organise ‘Jallikkattu’ or ‘manju virattu’ events during the festive occasion of Pongal.
Some of the places where this is conducted: Vellore, dam, Usur, Govindareddypalayam, Pulimedu, Katpadi, Thirumani, latheri, Ariyur, and Adukkamparai.
For following the ban imposed by the Court Order, Vellore District Police did not permit to organise this event. Hence, the promotional activities for organising such events were stopped.
The Police kept strict vigilance.
Despite this, the residents of Govnidareddypalayam Village had announced that jallikkattu will be organised. Enclosures & fences were being set up for the bulls. The event commenced as planned on yesterday (Sunday, 18thJanuary). The bull-owners from several adjoining areas had brought their bulls for the event.
Large crowd had gathered to witness the event.
However, the police got the information and a team was rushed to the place. They ordered to stop the even as it was banned.
However, the gathering ignored this and continued with the event. Hence, the police had to resort to lathi-charging only after which the event was stopped.
However, as the commotion in the area has not subsided, over 1000 police have been deployed.
A similar event was being organised at Usur Pulimedu village where a wild bull charged at one of the spectators and gored him. The person fainted and had to be admitted in the hospital with severe injuries.
The police came to know about jallikkattu being organised at Omalur, Kallakkurichi in Salme District. The police reached the place and ordered the public to stop. They had to resort to lathi-charging the youth who refused to obey the order.
Depite the ban. Jallikkattu was organised in some villages including Kachirapalayam in Villupuram district, Eduthavainatham, Mathur, Vadakkanandhal, and Aksharayapalayam,
