palar imageA large protest was organised by the ‘Palaru Protection Coordination Forum’ on Wednesday, 25th February, demanding proper protection for the river Palaru and better preservation.

 The protest demanded:

  • The sand removal from Palaru must be stopped immediately.
  • The project for linking the rivers Thenpennai & Palaru must be expedited.
  • Groundwater level has down further. Monsoo also failed this year. Hence, Vellore district should be announced as ‘drought district’.

The procession started from Arcot Road Murugan Temple and ended at the front of the district collector’s office.

All senior officials of the various committees participated.

At the end, the representatives of the procession attempted to enter the collector’s office to present their petitions. There was a minor accident when when a security official attempted to prevent this when his leg was trapped in the gate for preventing animal entry. A pipe had to be cut with the use of machinery to release his legs. This incident caused a mild excitement in the office complex.

Finally, some representatives were allowed to enter the collector’s office to present the petitions.
