A two-and-a-half year-old boy died in the village of Koorampadi near Vellore falling into a 350’ bore-well on Sunday.
All-out rescue efforts were made. In fact, the boy was alive when rescued and struggled for life for a long while and died in the end.
Kuttu (42) belongs to the village of Sambasivapuram near Arcot in Vellore District and employed abroad. Ms. Geetha is his wife. They have 2 children – Thamizharasan (2.5) and Nisha (1.5). Geetha’s parents were living with their son Madhavan in the village of Thazhanur near Arcot.
In the village of Koorampati near Arcot, a farmer, Kanagasabhai, owns a land hear the main road. For agricultural use, a bore-well was sunk at 300’ & 6.5” around 3 years ago. However, as there was no water, the piping was removed and the hole was covered with a rock.
Kanagasbhai made a visit to the land 2 days ago along with 2 of his relatives, He wanted to check whether water has now become available in this hole and removed the rock and checked by dipping a rope. They confirmed that there was no water. However, they returned without covering the hole by putting the rock back!
Meanwhile, the family has planned to offer special prayers and divine offering of ‘Pongal’ to their traditional family deity in the Village of Koorampadi. Hence, Geetha along with the children and her parents visited Koorampadi. They went to their land and started relaxing in the shed.
Children started playing in the open area. At that time, Geetha’son Thamizharasan, 2.5 years’ old, fell down in the open, uncovered hole where the bore-well and started crying calling his mother. All persons including Geetha rushed to the spot and rescue the kid. As the kid kept his hands raised, they tried to lift him. Nut he slipped and fell down.
The crowd nearby informed the police & fire-fighting. The fire-fighting squad reached the spot quickly. Rescue operations commenced.
At first, Oxygen was made available in the bore-well. The rescue team fitted a hook in a rope and dropped in the bore-well hoping the child will hold on it with his hands and come up. However, this could not happen.
The rescue team arranged to bring heavy duty equipment to drill a bigger hole. However, as rocks were encountered while drilling, this was stopped.
Them, rock-breaking equipment were brought and the activity started.
As the National Disaster Management Squad was informed, they arrived with the latest equipment. Rescue teams arrived from Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Trichy. A medical team was ready with ambulance to give treatment to the child immediately after the rescue.
As the crowd gathering had swollen with more than 3000 people in the area, there was some excitement. Police also arrived.
All the squads engaged in rescue. While side-drilling was going on, there was an attempt to rescue the child directly through the bore-well hole.
Vellore district collector Mr. R. Nandhagopal and Ranipet Assistant Collector Ms Priyadarshini arrived at the site. They asked the squads to expedite the rescue. Tamil Nadu State Minister for education, Mr. K C Veeramani also joined.
One of the reuse squad members, Mr. Daniel, from the Madurai team, dipped himself into the well with a rope. . The clip thrown caught the child’ shirt and the child were lifted easily.
The child was taken to the Wallaja Government Hospital by ambulance. However, the doctors declared that child was dead.
Thus, the total severe efforts taken from 11.00 AM till 5.00 PM with the child being rescued alive went futile. An air of sadness consumed the environment.
