Industry sector personnel are confident that the industrial estate will pick up once the infrastructure development project is completed at a cost of Rs. 22 Crores.
SIPCOT industrial estate was opened in 1974 in Mukundharamapuram near Ranipet. This has SIPCOT Section-1, SIPCOT Section-2, and 2 Special Economic Zones near Lalapet.
This is the largest industrial estate located in the Chennai-Bombay National Highway.
A total of over 500 factories including leather-conditioning, manufacture of leather products, chemical ite4ms, and perfumes are functioning in this industrial estate.
More than 50000 employees work here. Over 20000 employees are working in the leather industry alone.
The basic infrastructure provided when the industrial estate was started 40 years ago is still available. However, amenities such as roads, drainage canals, drinking water, and electricity have not been developed. The roads are in very bad condition unworthy of traffic. Employees were put to great hardships. Vehicles found it difficult toply on these roads.
The industrial sector was pressing its demand SIPCOT administration to improve these and the infrastructure
Funds of Rs. 22 Crores were allotted for the renovation/repair. of roads and drainage system. The renovation work started last week. The work is progressing at a good speed.
Industrial sector personnel expressed confidence that the SIPCOT industrial estate will flourish once again once the infra structure development works are completed.
