During the check yesterday (Wednesday, 1st June), Vellore police caught 45 persons without helmet. On the other side, the police welcomed those wearing helmet with a rose!
High Court had ordered that 2-wheeler riders & pillion riders must wear helmets from 1st July in Tamil Nadu.
Thus, compulsory helmet law became effective from yesterday, 1st July.
There was roaring business in the shops selling helmets with thronging crowds for buying helmets.
The prices og helmets were also up by a margin. As usual, some buyers explored & located shops selling helmet at lower prices. However, the stock was cleaned up quickly in these shops. They had to put up a notice board saying’ no helmet sales’!
In Vellore yesterday, most people took care to wear helmet barring a few.
Driving licence, RC Book, etc will be confiscated from persons driving 2-wheelers without helmet. These will be returned after showing proof of having bought helmet.
Checking activity by the police started yesterday morning by 9.00 Am as the police caught people without helmet.
Under the leadership of the Traffic circle Officer Prasanna, a team of traffic analysts including Kaliappan & Ramkumar. They presented a rose for the derivers with helmets.
The vehicles and record were confiscated from drivers without helmet. Totally 45 persons were caught and the vehicles were parked the regional traffic circle office. When the drivers returned with newly bought helmets and produced them, the vehicles and documents were returned.
The police were engaged on this activity throughout the state. The same procedure was adopted.
