Vellore Mayor: Agricultural officials should advise farmers!

vellore1Vellore Mayor Karthiyayini addressed that agricultural officials should offer advices to farmers.

‘Pewter Pres-season Awareness’ function and seminar were organised  on behalf of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and

Agricultural Science Council at Virinjipuram, Vellore yesterday, Thursday, 23rd July.

During the awareness programme, an exhibition was also organised on harvesting. Dam constituency MLA Kalaiarasu inaugurated the exhibition.

After this, seminar started. Mayor Kathiyayini presided. Senior officials led the show.

Releasing the hand-report  bulletin on Pewter pre-season awareness, mayor Karthiyayini addressed the gathering: faremers are the true ‘sons of the soil’.

Under the leadership of CM Jayalalithaa, Tamil Nadu has been a leading state on several fronts. Currently, rains are a scarcity. Vellore occupies the 3rd place among the districts with most absorbed groundwater.

Ith the sulphurous nature of the mountains in Vellore & Thiruvannamalai, rains are scarce. Many farmers complain that seeds are not available at the right times. Hence, the officials should keep the farmers informed as soon as the seeds arrive.

Agricultural officials should offer various suggestions to farmers like what to plant at which time and the details of harvest on that.

There are more than 300 varieties of greens. Most of them have medicinal properties. These benefits should be explained to the farmers by agricultural officials.

With the aim of good harvest & good profit, we tend to use more chemicals and spoil the natural fertility. Chemicals should be carefully used in fewer quantities to preserve the natural properties of the soil.

While releasing the hand-held bulletin for sugarcane harvesting and preservation, MLA Kalaiarasu addressed the gathering.

Food, clothing, and shelter are the 3 essential basic needs for humans. With food coming first, the importance of farming can be realised.

Pewter Pre-season is between June & September in Vellore. We depend entirely on the South=west monsoon.

Vellore requires 1100 mm of rain. The actual rainfall is only 370 mm.

There are 430 large lakes, 815 small irrigation lakes, and 1 lakh wells, in the district which have dried up. Harvest of rice, groundnuts, and sugarcane has come down.

Farmers should adopt the latest techniques. They have to plant rice, sugarcane, and groundnuts which can withstand dryness and require less water while having high market value.

Only when farmers are given the freedom to determine the price of their product, their lifestyles will improve. Proper compensation should be given to lands affected by wild animals.

Pesticides and seeds should be of high quality. Only when farmers are vigilant, society and the country will be vigilant and flourish.

All senior local officials participated.
