Trial of the automation of PDS (Public Distribution Shop) was carried out in PDS shops in Ariyalur & Perambalur districts for the last 6 months.
Satisfied with the popular good response of this automation trial, officials of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department are now hoping and planning to cover the entire state with automation of PDS shops.
Automation of PDS in Ariyalur & Perambalur started in November. POS or Point of Sales machines have installed in 700 shops in these 2 districts and also 40 shops across Chennai.
A senior official confirmed that automation of all PDS in the entire state will be set to be completed by June, 2016.
About 33000 POS (Point of Sales) machines are expected to reach Chennai from China by the end of this month and would be installed in all the PDS shops as soon as possible.
Once the current project of smart electronic ration card is completed and these smart cards are issued to the customers, the PDS will become highly efficient. Details like who purchased which commodity from which shop, how much supplies a customer is entitled to, and how much of stock is left, etc can be readily available.
