The current Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly completes its course of 5 years on 22nd May, 2016.
Earnest arrangements have already started being made for conducting the next Assembly elections.
In order to review the arragments being made for the ensuing Assembly Elections in the state of Tamil Nadu, Chairman of Election Commission Nazim Zaidi, Elections Officials Achal Kumar Jothi, and Ompraksah Rawat, are visiting Chennai o 9th February. They will conduct a review meeting on 10th & 11th February presided by Naim Zaidi & his team..
The first meeting will be with the representatives of political parties
After this meeting, a meeting will be conducted with the Tamil Nadu Chief of the Election Commission District Election Officers, District Police Superintendents, Constabulary Force, and Revenue Officers.
Detailed review will be conducted about voting operations and security arrangements.
After this, there will be a discussion whether to conduct Tamil Nadu
Assembly Elections in a single phase or in 2 phases. As most political parties have been insisting on a single phase election, it is expected that the assembly elections might be conducted on a single day.
A review will be conducted on the dates of the elections. The dates will be decided based on the other events like school/college examinations, festivals, etc.
In Tamil Nadu, School annual terminal examinations will be conducted till the last week of April. Hence, it is likely that the elections will be held only in May.
As the current Assembly comes to a close only on 22nd May, the election date is likely to be fixed as the 2nd week of May. The election officials feel that it would be best to conduct the assembly elections during the 2nd week of May.
So, the election are officials are deciding the exact date during the 2ndweek of May. Once they complete their South Indian leg of their tour, the officials will then invite the election officials of 5 states where assembly elections are due to be conducted.
The exact dates of elections will be announced after this. It is expected that the time table for assembly elections is likely to be released during start of next month, March.
If all the above review meetings get completed earlier, then there is scope for this time-table to be released by the end of this month, February.
