Compulsory Speed Limit Act (Lorries & Vans) effective from today (1st April)

max_speed_limit_vehicle_sticker_largeThe law of compulsory fixing of speed limit regulation devices in all lorries and vans comes into effect from today (Friday, 1st April).

The RTOs (Road Transport Officers) have warned that FC for the vehicles will not be given if the speed regulation device is not fitted in the vehicle.

On the average, around 1.40 lakh persons die in accidents per year. The main reason for the road accidents is the overspeeding of vehicles. Speed regulation devices have already been fitted in all school & college vehicles and state transport buses.

The central government, meanwhile, has issued an order that speed regulation devices must be fitted in all heavy-duty vehicles such as lorries, vans, freight vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and vehicles with more than 9 seats.

As per this new central government order, around 4,5 lakh lorries out of a total of 11 lakh lorries in the state of Tamil Nadu need to be fitted with speed regulation devices. Some of the lorry owners have already started fitting these devices. Other lorry owners have protested against this.

When RTOs were enquired about this, they explained that both central and state governments have taken actions to reduce accidents considering the safety of the public. Fixing speed regulation devices in the vehicles is one of the measures to this effect.

It has been ordered that all heavy-duty vehicles, including lorries and vans, must be fitted with speed regulating devices before 1st April.

A review meeting was held in this regard with RTOs. As per this meeting, vehicles will be checked for this under the leadership of RTOs. If these heavy-duty vehicles are not fitted with speed-regulation devices, FC will not be given.
