Employees were deployed to work for 12 hours per day. Weekly wages of Rs. 300/- are paid to them.
10 individuals were working as bonded-slaves in the brick quarry located at Kollaimedu, Nanjukondapuram, near Vellore for several years. They were rescued on Thursday, 9th April. There were 4 children with them.
On receipt of information, a team of officers led by Divisional Officer, Ms. Vasanthi, reached the spot for enquiry.

Enquiries revealed that there were 14 persons including 8 elders working in the brick quarry. They had received an advance of Rs. 15000/- from the owner to work in the quarry for cutting bricks. After the advance of Rs. 15000/-, they were being paid only Rs. 300/- per week. 10 of them working in the kiln were subjected to work non-stop for 12 hours.
The entire squad of workers were rescued on the spot. They were presented before the district collector. As per the Bonded Labour Prevention Act, all 12 persons were given Rs. 1000/- per head as interim relief.
Arrangements were made to give the rehabilitation assistance. Police complaint was made about the owner of the brick quarry at the village police station.
As the severely affected employees preferred to return to their native places, they were sent at government expense to their respective native places.
