VIT Chancellor commented that free higher education must be made available to each and everyone.
A 2-day seminar was organised at the VIT University from Monday (30th March) on the topics of establishing children’s rights and children’s safety,
VIT Chancellor, Mr. G. Viswanatahan, preaided and addressed the gathering.
The reason for lesser number of people pursuing higher education is many children from families living below poverty line discontinue their education seeking jobs.
This development puts a question on these children’s future. This must be rectified and bright future must be ensured for every child. Thus, free higher education becomes a necessity.
UNICEF Chennai Branch Officer, Mr. R, Vidyasagar, was the chief guest.
He informed that as per the statistics of 2011, there are 1 core child labourers in the country. Over 40% of the students of age group between 8 & 15, discontinue school and go for jobs.
This is why the government has offered skill development programmes. The government has brought an ambitious scheme to provide skill development so that 1 Core job opportunities arise by the year 2020.
