Grievance address meeting on Palar River sand quarrying

Vellore District Collector heard the complaints and opinions from the public from the village of Thottalam regarding the sand quarrying from Palar River

Government sand quarry has been made at Thottalam village, located near Ambur.

The residents have been protesting that there have been illegal practices on sand quarrying where excess quantities are taken causing fall in the groundwater levels.

As the area is dry and water-absorbent, they feel that sand quarrying should not have been constructed in this area. They have gone to the court demanding  that the quarry should be removed especially no clearance has been obtained from the environmental pollution board..

The court had ordered that all the public grievances should be heard and discussed and then a report should be submitted. Accordingly, a meeting was organised on Wednesday, 19th November by the district collector.

The public, along with advocate and representative of the farmers’ association and ex-MLA, and other representatives from different welfare committees met the collector. They demanded that the quarrying should be stopped. They also observed that the police is also a party to illegal quarrying.

The collector promised to submit a detailed report. He also promised that quarrying will be temporarily stopped till 25th November.
