There was some excitement when a woman carrying kerosene can arrived at the grievance meeting conducted in the District Collector’s Office.
A public grievance meeting was organised yesterday (Monday, 18th May) at the district collector’s office.
Thje district collector, Mr. R. Nandhagopal, presided.
Petitions regarding old-age pensions, release of land-ownership ‘patta’, financial assistance for differently-abled persons, etc were received.
The collector ordered the respective departments to take immediate actions.
There is an increasing tendency for some of the persons coming to attend the grievance meeting to indulge in self-immolation, etc due to mental frustration, and suicide etc.
In order to prevent such incidents, the police conduct thorough checks at the entrance of the collector’s office.
When the police were conducting checks etc (Monday, 18th May), it was found that Ms. Venda, wife of Periyasamy of Hattuppakkam Mettu street of Arkonam Taluk carried a drinking water bottle containing kerosene.
They confiscated the kerosene bottle from the woman and presented her in front of the collector.
The woman explained:
Her husband Periyasami is dead. She has 2 sons. She is running a petty shop for survival. However, the earnings are hardly enough. Hence, she requires finfnacial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Fund to help her life.She requires some employment as well.
The collector patiently heard and warned the woman not to repeat this.
In a petition submitted by Tamil Nadu vision-impaired association, they mentioned that a rehabilitation centre is available at old Katpadi Rajarathana Nagar Kulakkarai Street.More than 20 vision-impaired persons are stating here. They are in small scale industry making items like making camphor, and incense sticks.
However, construction activities have commenced in building a marriage hall in Kulakkarai Street. Hence, the street, which is already quite narrow, will become narrower. Apart from the students, other users including the visually –impaired moving in this street will be severely affected. Hence, a request is made to stop the construction of marriage hall.
Begging protest!
In a petition submitted by K V Kuppam administration pump-operators, it was mentioned that they have not been paid salaries over the last 6 months. When approaching the administration, there was no response. They requested immediate release of salary. Othgerwise, they plan to take up a ‘begging protest’.
Old age pension
In petition given by the senior citizens of old Katpadi, Nattarampalli, and Vilappakkam regions, they mentioned that they had been receiving monthly old-age assistance over the last 20 years. However, it has been stopped in the last few months. Eve their ration-cards have been cancelled. They had requested for early restoration of old age pension & return of ration cards.
Assistance from welfare schemes
During the grievance meeting, district collector, Mr. R. Nandhagopal, gave away free items like 3-wheeler cycle to 1 person, 2-wheeler chair to 1 person, ration cards for 68 persons from Katpadi Taluk, Arcot, & Wallaja through district distribution centre, free sewingmachines for 10 persons through district social welfare department, etc.
All senior local officials of relevant departments participated.
