An Art Festival was celebrated on the occasion of the 209thAnniversary of Vellore Sepoy Mutiny at Vellore Mandi Street on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ Association.
.Reception Committee leader Mr. Muthusiluppan presided over the occasion.
Aavin General Manager Aruljothi Arasan, District PRO Vijayakumar led the event.
District Secretary Mr. Surendran welcomed the gathering.
Revenue Officer Mr. Manvannan was the Chief Guest. He awarded souvenirs to rural artists and writers. He addressed the gathering:
The British used repression and ‘divide-and-rule’ policies to govern country and treated us like slaves. Religion-related repression was the main reason for Sepoy Mutiny. They insisted that Hindus should not apply holy ashe on their foreheads and the Muslims should not grow beards. This led to the Sepoy Mutiny in 1809.
Though Sepoy Mutiny was suppressed in a matter of 9 hours, This was the first seed for many revolutionary protests that were organised later.
The disunity among the Sepoys and warring without proper assessment of the strengths & weaknesses of their side & the opponents’ side were the main factors to the failure of the sepoy Mutiny. However, there is no doubt Sepoy Mutiny sowed the seeds for independence which was to be harvested later led by Indian National Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi. They had put up a great struggle and sacrificed a lot for this. Today;s younger generation should appreciate the magnitude of all this and cherish, treasure, and protect independence.
Before the start of the function, rural artists took a singing & dancing procession from the old fish market and reached the function venue of Mandi Street.
