Integration facility between Medicine & IT: Observation in Medical Edication Programme

Dr. Robert I. Fox, Chief, Rheumatology Clinic, Scripps Memorial Hospital and Research Foundation, San Diego,

California  was here to address a Continuing Medical Education Programme on ‘Sjogren’s Syndrome’ at the Christian Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday.

He observed that there should be a system to integrate medicine and information technology to help reduce the cost of treatment as well as the time taken for it.

India, which had a large pool of young engineers and physicians, was the right place to develop the system.

Under the method, the condition of a patient could be digitally photographed and transmitted through a remote sensing device fitted to his/her body to a doctor concerned who would study the information and immediately transmit back by e-mail advice whether the patient needed to go to the hospital or not.

If the patient required hospitalization, the information would be transmitted to the hospital concerned.

By this method, the cost of treatment and the time taken could be reduced greatly, thus helping the poor patients. .

Students, who are in the school final and well versed with computer applications, could be trained to develop the software for remote sensing and help the patients in their locality.

He observed that an anomalous situation prevails in India where, despite the availability of excellent physicians and equally excellent IT expertise, the country imports medical solutions whereas it can really export solutions,.
