There will be some relief to Tamil Nadu since Kudankulam nuclear power plant is expected to go up to its full capacity of 1,000MW by April. While this is by no means a complete solution to power problems in Tamil Nadu, it would provide some respite from outages during summer.
The plant is currently at 660-670MW and it is expected to achieve 1,000MW by April.
The process of getting clearances for operating to 90% capacity is on. After that we need another clearance (from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) to take it up to 100% capacity,” R S Sundar, site director at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, said. When the nuclear unit attains its peak 1,000-MW capacity, Tamil Nadu will get 512 MW of that — or roughly 12 million units of electricity a day. The power deficit in the state has been increasing over the last few years. But it could get better as work on the second unit of Kudankulam plant has begun.
