A total of 70 lakh children aged below five years were being covered in the first round of the campaign in Tamil Nadu. Of this, 50 lakh children were in rural areas and 20 lakh children in urban areas, Health Minister V. S. Vijay said during the inauguration of the campaign.
Dr. Vijay said that 40,399 booths – 35,793 in rural areas and 4,606 in urban areas – had been set up across the State. A total of 1,013 transit booths were set up at bus stands, railway stations and airports, while there were 771 mobile teams to reach to children living on hills and areas having less transport connectivity.
Two lakh persons were engaged to carry out the works and a total of 3,000 vehicles were put into use in the State.
A total of 9,157 staff from various government departments were roped in for the campaign.
The second phase of the campaign would be held on February 24.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Katpadi, took out a rally on polio awareness on Saturday.
The rally began at the school and went around areas including Kumarappa Nagar, Vallimalai Road and Chitoor Road and ended at the school.
Students raised slogans on eradicating polio and importance of polio drops.
