Plans to adopt scientific methods to dispose solid waste!

manage1A project to adopt latest scientific methods to dispose solid wastes to get over the difficulties encountered in the current procedure has been drafted in Vellore District and the project’s cost will be Rs. 155.78 Crores.

The initial activities have already commenced.

Handling the disposal of the solid waste has been a major problem for all local administrations.

In the earlier times, there will be waste-bin kept in the street ends. The public from the houses will deposit the wastes in these bins.

The local administration will then collect the waste in a 3-wheeler carts/vehicles and deposit the same in in distant neglected remote corner of the area owned by the local administration.

Later, the procedure of the 3-wheelers dumping the waste in a particular place to be later picked by trucks was adopted.

A plan ‘Solid Waste management’ was drafted and various methods of solid waste disposal were discussed.

The waste-bins kept in the street corners were removed. The system of the cleaners collecting waste from the individual houses was adopted. The system was developed further and it was decided to segregate the waste into 2 sections – bio-degradable & non-bio-degradable.

Modifications for the bifurcation were carried out.

Various events were organised in order to create public awareness about the solid waste disposal and the need to segregate the waste into bio-degradable & non-bio-degradable.

However, this could not be immediately adopted by the public. Hence, the cleansers collected the wats and after dumping, started segregating the waste.. Bio-degradable waste was converted into manure/fertiliser. Non-bio-degradabale items like plastic were resold.

However, the stench or bad smell emanating from the waste collection godowns, the incidents of the cleaners and/or anti-social elements setting the pile on fire, and the smoke emanating from it were causing health hazards to the public.

Even in the technologically advanced age, problems are still being encountered in disposing solid waste.

A joint committee was formed by combining all local administrations in order to analyse the difficulties in adopting scientific methods in disposing solid waste and to implement the same after overcoming these problems.

The city corporations of Vellore, Ambur, Arcot, Melvisharam, Vaniyambadi, Jolarpettai, Thirupathur, Gudiyatham , and Peranampattu joined together to implement a new project at a cost of Rs. 155.75 Crores for the disposal of solid waste.

The Managing directors of the city corporations have written letters to the individual corporations to obtain written approval to implement the project and passed a resolution on the same.

As per this plan, the waste collected by the corporations is segregated as bio-degradabale & non-bio-degradable. Bio-degradable waste is converted into manure in the same spot.

Non-bio-degradable waste will be taken from the open go-downs by special trucks to Vellore. A special godown at 60 acres has been set up in Vellore for this purpose where the trucks will deposit the collected the non-bio-degradable waste.

They will be taken to recycling centres for a variety of applications.

The remaining waste is removed by land-filling method without causing any harm to the environment.

The main aim of the project is to create litter-free or waste-free zones in the respective corporations.

Especially, the piles of waste in the dumping areas will now get disposed and create a litter-free or waste-free environment.

This development will prevent environmental pollution, health deterioration, and infection, etc.

The difficulties currently experienced by the corporations in the disposal of solid waste will get solved.

The space reserved in the city for dumping this waste will be free to be used for some other useful projects.
