Plea to impart skills-based training to nurses

Dr. Chandy stressed the need for the BNESIB to launch a nurse practitioners programme in view of the need for nurse practitioners in every district. These practitioners would provide solutions to health problems in the country as they can provide health service in rural areas which doctors fail to do. “We need to develop nurse managers and nurse specialists in different areas of healthcare,” he said.

The CMAI, Dr. Chandy said, should develop an accreditation body whose approval should be made mandatory for the starting of any nursing school in the country.

Punitha Ezhilarasu, professor and head, College of Nursing, Christian Medical College, who delivered the oration, stressed the need for integrating value-based education in nursing curricula to enable nurses to practice value-based nursing care.

Sudhir Joseph, president, CMAI, said that 400 to 500 Christian hospitals in India were closed in the last 40 years owing to competition in the field of healthcare owing to commercialisation of medical education and healthcare in the country.
