Within six months, the Department of Posts will roll out post office savings bank ATMs at all 94 Head Post Offices (HPO) in Tamil Nadu.Mervin Alexander, Postmaster-General, Chennai city region, informed this while participating in a function to release Permanent Pictorial Cancellation on Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital on the occasion of the 144th birth anniversary of CMC founder Ida Scudder.
Establishing ATMs came under the Core Banking Solutions (CBS) initiative of the Department of Posts.Under the CBS, post offices were being networked to enable account holders to carry out transactions in select post offices across the country.
The Reserve Bank of India had said the ATMs at post offices will function as standalones for the first year.
Then, inter-operability will come in under which customers can use these ATMs to withdraw cash from their bank accounts.
There are 275 CBS centres across Tamil Nadu where a post office will function like any commercial bank.
