Railways are exploring the possibilities of introducing SMS system in all ‘manless’ level-crossings in order to prevent/reduce accidents.
A discussion was held on this measure in Vellore when oa team of railway officials headed by the manager, Mr. Krishnakumar to study the manless level-crossings in Ariyur & Pellathur near Vellore.
Indian Railways run on distance of over 30000 km. Annual cases of 1000 deaths are reported in the accidents in manless level-crossings.
There are 32,700 railway gates in India. 18000 gates are located in city limits. Considering this aspect, Railway Ministry is planning to introduce SMS warning messages to ther mobile phones.
In the first phase, users of gates in city limits will be sent SMS warning messages.
In the second phase, SMS will be sent to the mobile phones of those who move on the manless level crossing gates. This can reduce accidents.
The latest GPS, GIS, and Remote Sensing technologies will be required for this. Signal tower will be located near the manless crossings through which SMS will be sent.
In the third phase, if the person does not read this SMS, a ring tone will be activated as a warning
The Railways Protection Department, Railways Information Technology Centre, and ISRO will jointly work on this project.
