The Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) is planning to establish a round-the-clock Comprehensive Emergency Orthopaedic and Trauma Care Services in all district headquarter hospitals and major taluk hospitals located on the major National and State Highways.
The District Headquarters Hospital, Walajapet in Vellore district has been included under this initiative.
As per the government order, the trauma care centres will be established in various district headquarters hospitals including Pollachi, Erode, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Udhagamandalam, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Srirangam and Kallakurichi, besides the 14 trauma care centres that are already functioning.
A minimum of four orthopaedic surgeons, two anaesthetists, two general surgeons and four general MBBS doctors will be posted at each centre. These centres will have blood banks.
Another trauma care centre has been functioning at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH).
The centre handles 300 to 400 emergency and trauma cases every month. The doctors perform 30 to 35 major surgeries and 150 to 200 minor surgeries a month, he added.
The trauma care centre has C-arm machine that has an X-ray imaging facility. There is also a CT scan facility.
