Twenty-five persons comprising scientists, technical officers and technicians employed in various establishments of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) pedalled their way to VIT University here on Tuesday night. They were on a bicycle tour from Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi, to create awareness of the products of DRDO which designs and develops equipment used by Army, Air Force and Navy, and employment opportunities available in the Central government organisation.
K. Anbazhagan, scientist of CVRDE and Sports Chairman of Adventure Club of CVRDE which organised the tour, said that during the first part of the tour which commenced at CVRDE in Avadi on Tuesday morning, the members visited Mamallan Institute of Technology, Vadamangalam near Sriperumbudur, and two schools where they gave a PowerPoint presentation on DRDO and a video presentation of Arjun MBT firing trials. They also explained about employment opportunities available in DRDO and procedure for recruitment. Students were told that those interested in joining the DRDO should appear for Scientist Entrance Test which is conducted by the DRDO every year.
The DRDO recruited 750 scientists every year. On recruitment, they would be posted as Scientist-B. They would get promotions once in four years, and also get opportunities for higher studies while serving the organisation, he said.
In Vellore, members of the tour explained the DRDO products to a gathering of members of the public at the fort. On its return journey, the tour would be flagged off by Sekar Viswanathan, vice-president, VIT, on the university campus on Thursday morning. During the return journey, the team would visit Pallavan Engineering College, Arakkonam, and Bhakthavatchalam Polytechnic, Kancheepuram, and return to CVRDE, Avadi, in the night.
The tour was formally flagged off by Avinash Chandar, Scientific Adviser to the Minister for Defence, on Monday. Participants are from DRDO establishments in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmednagar, Kochi and Chandigarh.
