A 2-day seminar was organised on Thursday, 9th July for farmers/agriculturists on horticulture. This was inaugurated by the district collector R. Nandhagopal. He addressed the gathering:
Around 32000 hectares area is is used for horticultural purposes in Vellore district. This constitutes to be 18% of the total area used for agriculture.
Mango alone is grown on 14800 hectares.
Plantains, sapotas, guava, and other fruits, vegetables, and flowers are also grown.
Among the vegetables, a popular type of br4injal, known as ‘mullu katharikkai’ or ‘ilavambadi katharikkai’ is grown in Vellore.
Tamil Nadu has been introducing various measures to facilitate the farmers to double their harvest.
National Horticultural Movement, National Herbs Movement, National water irrigation movement, etc are functioning in this respect.
Farmers can employ microbial irrigation system to enhance their harvest.
Under this scheme, micro & small level farmers are given 100% subsidy for installing drip irrigation systems.
Other farmers get 75% subsidy. Farmers should set up reservoirs in their fields for saving rainwater.
The collector released the farmers’ Technical Handbook.
All local senior officials participated.
Agricultural & horticultural administrators, farmers, and traders also participated.
