Dr. Shashi Tharoor, was addressing the Graduation Day of the Christian Medical College (CMC) here on Monday.
India needs doctors with total commitment to serve the huge population of poor people who require access to quality health care at affordable cost.
Dr. Tharoor advised the doctors to treat the patients based on their diseases and their needs and not on their ability to pay.
He urged the graduates not to join the band of doctors who prescribe unnecessary scans and procedures to get commission from companies. He stressed that ethics is an integral part of the professional standards of doctors.
The MP gave away the Mrs. Mariaviakulam David Memorial Medal for the Best Outgoing Student to Meghana Kovvuri.
He presented the merit awards to the outgoing graduates. Fifty-four candidates received their MBBS degrees at the convocation.
