School and college students presented dance and music programmes and skits to convey the message of diabetes awareness to the public at the valedictory programme of the World Diabetes Month—2013 celebration, organised by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism of Christian Medical College (CMC) here on Saturday.
Nihal Thomas, Head, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the CMC said that the theme of the World Diabetes Month-2013, ‘Together for Diabetes’ provides a unique platform to create awareness about the risk factors of diabetes— its manifestations and complications among the general population as well as professionals from all spheres of life. These celebrations were also aimed at nudging the young generation towards realising the importance of adapting a healthy lifestyle and educating them on the strategies to prevent diabetes.
The CMC organised a series of events including cookery competition, nursing quiz, medi quiz, essay writing competition, painting competition, teachers’ quiz, exhibition and poster competition, cycling and self-composed dance competition involving school and college students and people from all walks of life around Vellore from October 2013 to March 2104.
The deserving winners of each event were felicitated at the valedictory programme on Saturday.
“The efforts of the Department are nothing but reinforcement that no matter what your risk factors are, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise are the key to reduce your risk of developing diabetes,”, said Professor Thomas. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal, CMC who was the chief guest, advised children to understand diabetes and exercise control on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. He emphasised the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits.
The dance competition was held on the theme, ‘Diabetes and Eye’. St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Vellore bagged the first prize, Shanthiniketan Matriculation HSS the second prize and Shrishti Matriculation HSS the third prize among the schools. St. John Nursing College, Thuthipet won the first prize, Venkateswara Polytechnic College, Vellore the second prize and College of Scudder Memorial Hospital, Ranipet the third prize among colleges.
