Yesterday (Monday, 26th January, Republic Day) being a holiday, there was an unprecedented increase in the number of passengers in Katpadi Railway station.
A long queue of passengers waited for buying tickets.
The station was abuzz with activity.
Though Pongal holidays were over last week, with the weekend of Saturday, Sunday, followed by Republic Day and the wedding days during this week, the passenger crowd at Katpadi Railway Station was quite large.
There are many employees from Vellore who travel to Chennai & Bangalore for their jobs. However, they visit their native places during weekends & holidays. Hence, it is normal to expect more crowds in the station during weekends.
A number of people who had come to visit their native places on the occasion of Pongal holidays during the previous week and the 3 successive holidays (Saturday, Sunday, & Republic Day) during this week were all returning to their workplaces. Hence, there was an unprecedented crowd level in the station.
Even passengers who had reserved in advance found it quite difficult to get a seat in their trains!
RPF (Railway Protection Force) was deployed to to avoid any untoward incidents and they were monitoring the situation through surveillance cameras & security systems.
Public demand for additional ticket counters:
With 1000s of passenger travelling daily, and the experience of the unprecedented crowds on weekend & occasions, the public have demanded opening of additional ticket counters in Katpadi Railway Station.
