The public took offence on the stagnant effluent water from a leather refining factory in the road near Puliyanthangal, Ranipettai and took siege of the factory. They announced that they would go on an endless protest if immediate action is not taken.
They went to the police station and registered a complaint regarding the same.
There are more than 15 leather refining factories in SIPCOT, near Puliyanthangal under Narasingapuram city administration council near Ranipettai.
The effluents from these factories are taken the 2nd Section common purification plant and treated for purification.
The received effluents will be stored in a well owned by the treatment plant. It will be pumped and sent to the purification plant. This well is located near the village of Puliyanthangal. In fact, all public and vehicles will have to cross this well to reach Puliyanthangal village.
In this process, when the effluent water was being pumped to the treatment plant, there was some leakage in the pipelines and the water started accumulating and flowing on either side of the road. This water has reached the lake. It is gathered that a cow which drank this water became sick.
As aprotest against this, Puliyanthangal village residents, led by former city administration council president Mr, Varadaraj, Vice-president Mr. Mohan, and Sheriff Mr. Govindaswamy went to the factory and took siege.
Treatment plant manager Mr. Simon held discussions with them. He promised immediate action by reporting to the Managing Director of theplant. However, the public wasnot satisfied with this. They went to SIPCOT Police Station and registered a complaint. Sub-inspector Mr. Muktheeswaran held discussions with them.
The protester explained the effluent water is let out during the nights. As the water reaches the lake, the groundwater also gets polluted. A cow had falled in the effluent well and died. A few months ago, there was an incident of 10 persons dying due to the overflow of the effluent water from the broken storage system.
Hence, the well located at the 2nd treatment plant must be closed and another well to be dug in a non-residential location. Only this is the remedy for the public to live without this problem. Police has to take immediate action on this regard.
Sub-inspector Mr. Muktheeswaran promised to send the complaint to the environmental and Pollution administration for immediate necessary action.
The protesting public accepted this and dispersed announcing that the protest will continue if no action is taken.
