Vellore corporation officials conducted surprise checks in various shops and confiscated all plastic articles in violation of the regulated dimensions.
Vellore corporation has ordered that plastic items below 40 microns should not be sold in shops. However, many shops continue to sell covers and cups made of plastic.
Corporation Commissioner Janaki ordered confiscation of these items. Accordingly, the surprise checks were conducted in more than 20 shops.
The items made of plastics of less than 40 microns were all confiscated and a strict warning was issued not to sell the same. Action will be taken on those who fail to do so and heavy fines will be laid.
The officials observed that these plastic items increase pollution level and also cause blockages in canals, etc and hence should not be used.
Surprise checks will continue!
