5,674 houses were constructed at a cost of Rs 209 Crore for the benefit of people living in coastal districts of the State. Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated these houses through video conferencing from the Secretariat here Tuesday. She also inaugurated `Rescue Roads` for 41 km, set up at a cost of Rs 23 Crore, to evacuate people during emergencies like a tsunami.
362 new buildings constructed by the Rural Development department at a cost of Rs 21.78 Crore was also inaugurated by the Tamilnadu Chief Minister.Immediately after the tsunami struck Tamilnadu coast in 2004, the government led by Jayalalithaa jumped into action and carried out relief works.The government decided to reconstruct 14,364 houses, that out of them, 8,251 were opened by Jayalalithaa in March 2012. In the second phase, she inaugurated 5,674 houses on Tuesday.
Each of the 325 square feet houses, built at a cost of Rs. 3.75 lakh, can withstand natural phenomenon like tsunamis and earthquakes and have been insured for 10 years.Municipal Administration Minister K P Munusamy, Chief Secretary Sheela Balakrishnan and others were present when the Chief Minister inaugurated the above facilities.
