10 lives were lost tragically following the explosion of effluent treatment tank constructed without prior government approval in a leather treatment tannery plant in SIPCOT, Ranipet.
As an echo of this tragic accident, immediate steps were taken to remove 5000 tons of dry solid waste material with the help of Poclain machines to be dumped in trucks to be taken to Tamil Nadu Waste Management LTd plant ai Gummidipundi, near Chennai. They would be treated there for removal of all toxic contents.
The Joint Chief Engineer of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Department, Mr. Jayakumar, informed that actions have been initiated to complete this task within 140 days.
The task of removing the leather waste material at the accident site has continued for the 2nd day today.
Officials from Central Pollution Control Board, Bangalore, have also camped at the accident site to conduct enquiry/analysis.
It must be mentioned that Tamil Nadu Waste Management Ltd, started in 2007 at Gummidipundi near Chennai in an area of 26 acres, undertakes the task of treating the different types of toxic wastes from different industries safely.
